Does insurance cover the removal of excess skin following gastric bypass surgery?

Question by yanksgirl: Does insurance cover the removal of excess skin following gastric bypass surgery?
Since gastric bypass surgery is for severe/morbid obesity, does insurance cover the removal of the large amount of skin left after weight loss—which can cause many health issues, following the surgery?

I can tell you from my experience, no. I think it would really depend on your insurance and your actual condition. If your doctor finds that it is medically necessary for you to have the surgery, it could be covered.

I know in my situation being 10 months out from surgery…extra skin is a problem already

Yes and no. Some insurance plans feel the removal of excess skin is purely cosmetic and don’t cover it. Some are a bit more lenient and will cover it if you are having problems such as documented and medically treated skin infections. I was lucky and found a loophole in my plan and at least was able to get an abdominoplasty done and covered. However, had I needed a lower body lift, I doubt I would have gotten that. Forget about arms and legs getting done, too.

Yes, it is usually covered if there are real health issues for the person. Keep in mind that there are multiple insurances that people use even when on a government disability. You are given a choice to pick a plan under disability, so the insurances can vary as to how difficult or easy it is to get this surgery covered. But most will do it if the health is affected such as chronic skin infections, rashes, etc. I know one person that got it done without any problem while another has to go to a doctor and use cream on a rash for 4 months before the insurance would allow it. All you can do it ask and find out what the requirements are for your insurance.
