if you have had this surgery already, have any of you noticed their monthly grocery budget being much less after the surgery. Serious question, so no jokers please. I am on a fixed income. THanks!

    um… although i’ve never had weight problems
    but i believe that it’s all about self control

    even if you do get the surgery but if YOU do not change or do not have the desire to change your eating habits, you will get fat again, and your grocery budget will stay the same

    so change your eating habits or at least have the desire to
    then it wouldn’t matter if you have surgery or not and your monthly grocery bill will be MUCH less

    I haven’t had the surgery, but my cousin had the surgery around 4 years ago. She eats very little now and her grocery list would be very small if her husband didn’t eat more. Yes, but you would probably need vitamins and supplements to help you wich would bring costs up some. Insurance may help you with this.

    I have had this surgery 4 years ago with much success. I am not sure i saw a decrease in my food budget, the quantity of food you purchase may go down, but the quality goes up if that makes sense. You are now going to be buying only fat-free, sugar free items. And lets face it, in our nation today, eating heathier is more expensive. Which is CRAZY. I did opt to spend my money on more organic and natural items. If I am going to eat less, i want it to be the best it can be. I am speaking in terms of veggies and meat. You can’t really find fat-free and organic…the 2 don’t mesh.

    Bariatric surgery is a godsend to those with serious obesity-I mean,like 100 lbs or more over weight-or whoever has dangerous health problems because of their weight. Too many people,however,fail to realize that this is life-altering surgery and can be very dangerous in itself. After the surgery you must be careful what you eat,the amounts,etc. I hope you did a lot of research in this matter and I wish you the best of luck.And,yes,your grocery bill will decrease,but your drugstore bills may increase. Your clothing bill will increase too,as your new body begins to emerge! And don’t forget about a well-thought-out exercise plan as advised by your doctor.     It is a time-honored tradition to make resolutions at this time of year. If your resolution is to lose weight – and keep it off, then keep reading! Here are six simple tips that will have you losing weight in a balanced and healthy way.

    1. Lose weight with water.
    Water is essential for everybody – it is also the key to losing weight. If you haven’t been drinking enough water, your body has developed a pattern of storing water. This water retention equals extra unwanted weight.

    By drinking more water, you are not only flushing out toxins, you are also teaching your body that it no longer needs to store water. Drink at least 60 ounces of water (about 8 glasses) a day. Boil water and sliced lemons, and drink this throughout the day to help with fluid retention. If you are still not sold on the merits of water, try this on for size: water is a natural appetite suppressant.

    2. Soup up your weight loss program.

Studies show that when you eat your daily protein and fat at breakfast you tend to lose weight and have more energy; however, eating the same things at dinner tend to increase tendencies toward weight gain. I suggest that you eat your last meal of the day by 7 p.m.

    4. Eat smaller meals, more frequently.
    Follow an eating schedule with five little meals every day. Eating steadily through the day keeps you from becoming famished and overeating at your next meal. Make a low-fat trail mix from raw almonds, pumpkin seeds, dried plum, and apples and have it available at all times to avoid the tempting lure of high-calorie snacks.

    5. Adopt a balanced approach to your diet.
    Most of the fad diet programs out there nowadays are extreme in a few recommended foods, or else deprive the body of food altogether. This works in opposition to our metabolism and the results usually don’t last, producing a yoyo effect that depresses your metabolic function – not to mention your self-esteem. We are natural beings that need a balance of nutrition from all sources.

    Your diet should consist of a balance of organic sources of lean protein, complex carbohydrates, whole grains, legumes, nuts, fruits, and vegetables. Instead of white rice and pasta, opt for brown rice, bulgur, millet, or buckwheat.

    Eat more green, chlorophyll-rich foods such as broccoli, kale, spinach, and asparagus. Eliminate candy, sugar, soda, and all simple sugars from your diet. Excess sugar ends up being stored as fat in your body, which results in weight gain. Also, keep dairy to a minimum because most dairy products are high in saturated fat.     6. Walk off the weight.
    The No. 1 cause of weight gain is inactivity. Physical activity is the key to speeding up your metabolism and burning excess calories. The best way to be physically active is to use your legs! Walk as often and as long as you can. Always take the stairs instead of the elevator.

    Step outside during your break at work and take a walk around your building. Consider joining a local hiking club. Try taking a walk 30 minutes in the morning or 30 minutes in the early evening.

    I had the surgery 1 year ago, I eat least and generally spent a little least on food. I eat more fat free and sugar free food that are more expensive but I also expense least eating out of home and the cost of this compensate the other cost. For example a combo is $ 5 and now you eat the 99 cent selection and are full.Good luck with the surgery.

    Ah, the uneducated come out again, I see. ::sigh:: People just don’t get that obesity is a disease. It can be because of an addiction to food, various medical problems and a whole host of other things. The World Health Organization (WHO) classified obseity as a disease several years ago but folks still don’t see it that way. All they see is “why not eat less, exercise more, yada, yada, yada….” Sounds easy but as anyone who smokes or any alcholic can tell you, it’s not that simple.

    Ok, with that response to some of the other answers out of my system, no, I’ve not had surgery yet. I too am scheduled for the end of this month. And your question is valid. I’ve asked it also and as one veteran of WLS has told me, you’ll be surprised where you’ll see savings. Not just food, but in simple things like doing laundry. You can do waaaay more laundry of small clothes than large clothes! ;o)

    One thing to keep in mind is that you’ll need to keep your protein level up. There are several protein drinks on the market including Isopure (from GNC … order online or get it locally; use their Gold Card to save on purchases from the 1st to the 7th of each month), Unjury (www.unjury.com … very reasonable shipping rates too), EAS low carb drinks (available at Wal-Mart) and many more, I’m sure. While some of these might be a bit pricy at first, remember that as you lose weight, the amount of protein needed in a day will decrease also.
